Outer Banks Pirate Festival
Monday, September 15, 2008 - Saturday, September 20, 2008 (10am - 8pm)

Kitty Hawk Kites (Milepost 12.5): Appearances at several local businesses by pirates. The main event
will be September 20th with an entire day of pirate appearances, games and stories.


Day at The Docks - A Celebration of Hatteras Island Watermen
Saturday, September 20, 2008 - Saturday, September 20, 2008 (10am - 5pm)

Hatteras Village Waterfront: The commercial and charter fishing fleets will display their boats, skills,
products and gear in a variety of competitions and demonstrations. There will be a number of maritime-
inspired games for children and fresh, local seafood will be featured in a chowder cook-off and cooking
demos. Traditional wooden boats, including a shad boat, NC's State Boat, a beach dory and a mullet
skiff will be on site. Musical entertainment throughout the day. Blessing of the Fleet begins at 5:30 p.m.


Build a Boat in a Day
Thursday, September 25, 2008 - Thursday, September 25, 2008 (9am - 5pm)

NC Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island: Build an 8 foot plywood boat. Teams will build a boat using
the stitch and glue method. Workshop cost includes all materials and finished boat at end of the day.
Cost: $275 members / $300 non-members. Minimum age is 8 years old with adult. Workshop limit is 5
teams.

Outer Banks Music Showcase (3848 N Croatan Highway): The Outer Banks Music Showcase presents
its Regular Season Show, ''Flashback.'' The Outer Banks' live musical variety show, ''Flashback,'' is fun
for the whole family. Take a trip back in time to the 50s, 60s and 70s!

July performances are held as follows:
July 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, 23, 24, 29 and 31 at 7:30 p.m. and July 10 at 2:00 p.m.

August performances are held as follows:
August 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26 and 28 at 7:30 p.m. and August 14 at 2:00 p.m.

Roanoke Island Festival Park: lizabethan Tymes: A Country Faire will open on Saturday, October 4, and
continue through Sunday, October 5. The Faire will be held, rain or shine, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both
days. The Guilde of St. Andrew, based in Raleigh, North Carolina and frequent presenters with Roanoke
Island Festival Park, will take the lead in bringing Elizabethan England to life. The Faire will be held, rain
or shine. It is open the public. The admission price to the Faire is included in Roanoke Island Festival
Park's general admission ticket and is good for both days of the event.


Bill Nelson: New Works
Monday, October 06, 2008 - Wednesday, October 29, 2008 (9am - 5pm)

Art Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park: Bill Nelson of Roanoke Island is featuring new illustrations
and figurative sculpture. He is a nationally known artist whose work has appeared in numerous national
publications including Newsweek, Time and The New Yorker. His figurative sculptures or dolls are in
the collections of Whoopi Goldberg, Demi Moore and David Copperfield. Personality exudes from these
remarkable works that feature lifelike gestures and detailed clothing. His illustrations are created using
colored pencil. Generating a flawless technique, Nelson leaves the viewer breathless. He created a
series of stamps of Big Band leaders for the US Postal service and has received over 500 accolades for
his work. An opening reception will be held on October 5. It is free and open to the public. The show
hours are Mon- Fri from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Outer Banks Music Showcase (3848 N Croatan Highway): This 2-day event features a variety of
workshops and an evening concert. Presented by the Outer Banks Music Showcase, October 10 will
feature a Mandolin Workshop with Sierra Hull from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., a Bluegrass Guitar
Workshop with Ron Block from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., a Banjo Workshop with Ron Block from 2:00 to 5:
00 p.m. and a Ron Block and Sierra Hull Concert at 7:30 p.m. Optional Day 2 on October 11 features a
Banjo Workshop with Richie Dotson at 9:00 a.m.

Ron Block: For the past 17 years, Ron Block has been the spiritual touchstone of Alison Krauss and
Union Station, contributing sterling musicianship on banjo, guitar and vocals. A Grand Ole' Opry
performer, Ron brings a unique and distinctive style to the banjo, playing with spontaneity and fervor,
while holding the precision and solidity that bluegrass demands. His three hour master class promises
to offer unique insight to playing the banjo from one of today's true greats!

Sierra Hull: It is rare that a young musician will take that spark of wonder that first inspired them to
cradle an instrument and cultivate it to the point of full-blown virtuosity. Only sixteen years old, Sierra Hull
displays instrumental facility and musical maturity well beyond her age with ''Secrets,'' her national
debut album. Hull began playing mandolin at age eight, and quickly became noted on the national
festival scene for her fluid, inventive picking - winning several mandolin and guitar championships in the
process.

Cost is $45.00 per person, per workshop. Receive a $5 discount for multiple workshops. Workshop
attendees receive a $5 discount for Friday concert ticket.

Wright Brothers National Memorial (Milepost 7.5): This Eastern League event brings the best kite fliers
on the circuit to The Wright Brothers National Memorial for stunt kite competition. Come see kite flying
ballets, team competition, etc. Kid's games and lesson from professionals will be available as well.

Hee Haw television shows from the 70s with our foot stompin', hand clappin' and toe tappin' version of

The 5th Annual Haunted Corolla Village

Currituck Heritage Park: Currituck Heritage Park will be haunted for two days. Come and join us for a
ghoulishly good time! If you dare to explore the spooky park grounds, you may unravel the clues and
discover the hidden treasure that was mysteriously buried many years ago. For the more faint-at-heart a
Haunted Hayride through Historical Corolla Village awaits: Take a slow trot on the hay cart through the
village listening to ghostly stories of yester-year.

Meet at the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education to buy your tickets: $6.00 per person - one ticket
covers both the hayride and the treasure hunt. Grab an eerie treat at the Bake Sale. Please remember to

Trick or Treat Under The Sea

NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island: Spooks, ghosts and strange aquatic creatures will greet children as
they enjoy this popular event. Aquarium staff will make preparations to ensure a spooktacular time for
all. This event will feature an underwater dive show, Count Sharkula, creepy crafts, activities, spine-
tingling scream contests, costume contests, and lots of yummy munchies to be given to each child
during the event. Ticket sales will begin on October 1st with admission fee for ages 3 and above; those
age two and under will be admitted free. Tickets are limited and will be sold in advance at the Aquarium.


Outer Banks Fiber Guild: Fiber Fantastic

Art Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park: The Outer Banks Fiber Guild contributes a variety of fiber
works to the show including weavings for decorative and functional purposes. Visitors will be able to
see how far artists can stretch their craft from creating delicate hand towels to large wall coverings. It is
an eclectic show that will include stunning wearable art. An opening reception will be held on November
2 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public. The show can be seen Monday to Friday from 9:
00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Billy Brown: Local Color

Art Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park: Billy Brown is a long time Outer Banks waterman who has a
passion for NC history. He is a former teacher who loves to paint scenes from the area to include
Oregon Inlet vistas he's seen while fishing. His acrylics feature seasonal shots of sunrises and
sunsets and landscapes of the area including Bodie Island. He paints underwater fish scenes and
anglers. An opening reception will be held on December 7 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. It is free and open to
the public. The show can be viewed Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.


Currituck Heritage Park 2nd Annual Tree Lighting Celebration
Saturday, December 13, 2008 (5pm)

North Lawn at Currituck Heritage Park: See the giant cedar tree in Currituck Heritage Park and the
Currituck Beach Lighthouse simultaneously illuminated. Gather on the north lawn to enjoy free hot
chocolate and sing carols with the Currituck County High School Choral Ensemble. Following the
lighting ceremony, the Whalehead Club will offer complimentary docent-led holiday tours to show off the
decorations inspired by the 1920's etchings of Edward Collings Knight, Jr. Alternatively, take a romantic
horse-drawn carriage ride snuggled under a fluffy blanket through Historic Corolla Village.


Holiday Piano Concert

Library at The Whalehead Club: Festivities will continue in the library of the Whalehead Club with a
Holiday Piano Concert featuring the fabulous voices of the Currituck County High School Choral
Ensemble singing holiday favorites. The second half of the concert you will be entertained by the
amazing talents of local resident Jo Nell Belsie who was classically trained at the famous
Conservatoire de Paris. Listen to Mrs. Knight's custom-made Steinway Grand Piano positively burst with
passion as Jo Nell's fingers dance across the 105 year old ivory keys. Tickets for the concert are $35
per person and include a dessert reception during the intermission.


Elizabethan Christmas

Roanoke Island Festival Park: Don't let the holiday spirit fade! On Saturday, December 27, come join in
the fun as Roanoke Island Festival Park celebrates the third day of Christmas. Visitors to the Park can
get a taste of 16th century holiday traditions from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. as they make decorations, learn
special dances, sing songs, discover food and drink of the season, and indulge in merriment with
members of the Guild of St. Andrew. Many events will be held inside and the celebration will go on, rain
or shine. In the Settlement Site visitors can join with the interpreters as they “recreate” their celebration
in the American wilderness, with simple decorations and a roast over the open fire. There may even be
a few more surprises of the season. We'll see you there and wish you Merry Yuletide!


Winter Piano Concert

The Whalehead Club: The Whalehead Club welcomes back the talent of Jason K. Evans, a local to the
Outer Banks since 1988 and currently organist / hand bell director for the Outer Banks Presbyterian
Church. Be mesmerized by the finesse with which Jason handles the century old Steinway Grand
Piano, drawing out the melodies from the polished mahogany. Accompanying Jason will be vocalist
Sondra Meinhardt and friends who will perform classics from the 1920's era as well as holiday
favorites. Tickets are $35 per person or four for $100 and include a dessert reception during the
intermission.
